Any suggestions for Migraine prevention?
I have been getting migraines every 1 1/2 weeks for the last 3 months. (At times the migraines were 2x a week.) They seem to go in a pattern coming specific days apart–although the number of days last for a while and then switches to another number of days apart. I get the 20-30 minute aura before the migraine starts. Imitrex doesn’t really work. I now take Fioricet for the symptoms and it works fairly well. I do eat chocolate every day, but that is not a new thing. I don’t drink coffee or red wine. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do or why I am getting them. When they intially started I was really stressed and anxious. I have since tried to calm myself down for the most part. I did end up with anxiety induced High Blood pressure but with the help of medicine that is now back to normal. Thank you for your help.
I forgot to mention that I’m a Dental Hygienist. So I do have a lot of muscle tension in my neck and shoulders.

In studies majority of migraines are caused form allergies of some kind or another. Alot of them are food allergies. The thing is, just because you always have eaten chocolate doesn’t mean your body has not developed an allergy to it.I had migraines and always ate onions on most everything I could.I ignored the idea that, that was the cause because I didn’t want to stop eating what I loved. But, when I finally did the migraines went away. After some time I became able to eat them again in moderation without any problems.
Chocolate has a lot of natural caffeine in it and is hard on the digestive system. Its very likely this is your culprit. Just remember it takes time for its affects to leave your body completely.Don’t eat it for a full week, then see if there is a change in your headaches.
Good luck!

Any pain is often a deficiency of some sort. I used to get them too until I started taking magnesium. Research it.

I’m a nurse. You could have a food allergy. Most migraines are triggered by food allergies, lack of sleep, skipped meals, or even stress. I would leave the chocolate alone, I know it’s hard but I did. Also pay close attention to when you have them and what you were eating or what you did that could have possibly started it. I would talk to my doctor in order to get them under control. Make a journal about them and you’ll eliminate them from your life. And yes I did try these techniques and it worked for me.

Your migraines could be a sign of something really serious (besides stress and anxiety). Try drinking black tea and yoga. It relaxes your mind, body, and soul. I would also suggest seeing your Primary Health Care Provider if your migraines get worse. I was diagnosed with severe migraines years ago and placed on medication (basically a high dose of Excedrin). I stopped the pills, got rid of the people who brought negativity to my life, started exercising, and I haven’t got a migraine since then. GOOD LUCK!

I do aromatherapy. Try inhaling pur 100% peppermint oil. Also use a tennis ball and place it under your neck and lie on the floor rolling it under your neck to act as a pressure point. Doing Tai Chi or Yoga may release stress trapped in your body. You may need to check with your doctor regarding the hormone levels around your cycle or possible emdomitrosis.

Its hard to say what will prevent them. I use Maxalt and it works for me. I get migraines and clusters and I’ve tried several medications and Maxalt works the best for me. I also use it in combination with an OTC medication called Head On, you put it right on your forehead.

This may not be your situation, but head injury can cause migraines also.

have you ever tried seeing a physical therapist or have a massage? I too, get migraines and the therapist and massage helps.

I’ve also had migraines for most of my life. I heard all of the food allergy arguments and tracked everything I ate, but could never come up with a common food or foods. Eventually i had a doctor tell me to make sure to take a multi vitamin everyday and (as someone else here mentioned) a magnesium supplement. that was eight years ago and I haven’t had one since.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information
